Composition - how the Elements of Design are arranged in a work of art.
The ELEMENTS of ART are the “materials” that are used in creating a design. One, two, three or any number of the Elements may be used in such a way as to achieve the desired design.
The five elements of art we commonly use are:
LINE length- 1 dimension
SHAPE height and width - 2 dimensional - a closed line
- geometric shapes - amorphous shapes
FORM height, width and depth- 3 dimensional
TEXTURE surface quality
COLOR The name given to a specific wavelength of light
Hue – the basic color on the color wheel
Value – the lightness or darkness of a color
Intensity or Saturation – how much of the hue is in the color

Principles of Design
Composition - how the Elements of Design are arranged in a work of art.
The PRINCIPLES of DESIGN are the “rules” that determine good composition. The Principles are the basis of all art, and are used in every style of art.
BALANCE - a sense of evenness. The elements of your design should be arranged to give an appearance of balance or evenness throughout your composition. Designs may be balanced FORMALLY or INFORMALLY.
FORMAL BALANCE INFORMAL BALANCE
is symmetrical is asymmetrical
EMPHASIS - one or more parts of a design stand out.
One or more elements of your composition may be emphasized depending on the way the colors, lines, shapes, forms or texture is used.
RHYTHM - a sense of movement.
The elements must be organized to give a clear pattern or flow of movement and direction. Repetition, overlapping and patterns are good ways to create rhythm.
UNITY - when all parts fit together to form a whole. The elements should work for a common purpose and
give a single theme to the design. Unity may be achieved by using such techniques such as overlapping and repetition of related lines or shapes, and through the use of standard color harmonies.
