Value & Value Scales
Assignment:
1. View demonstrations on value scales using HB pencil for lightest values. Values will appear darker by adding an additional layer, NOT necessarily by changing the pressure. DO NOT PRESS TOO HARD!
2. Complete the Value Scales given. Complete the step value scales.
HB -> B -> 2B -> 3B -> 4B -> 6B or EBONY (HB is the lightest, Ebony and 6B are the darkest (you may have darker ones, that is fine)

2. Complete the Value Scales given. Complete the step value scales.
- Step Value Scale - SMOOTH
- Step Value Scale - HATCHING
- Step Value Scale - CROSS HATCHING
- Complete Gradual Value Scales - slow transition from dark to light OR light to dark.
- The gradual value scale should take an entire class period. This should not be rushed. A careful development of layers is necessary to create a smooth gradual change in value. Overlapping, lightly cross hatched lines should be used. Avoid LONG monotonous strokes. Create concentrated, small marks. You should use a combination of HB and your drawing pencils from HB -> 6B

Video 1: How to fill in a light value using #2 pencil or HB pencil. Be sure to apply light pressure in overlapping layers. Play video.
Video 2: Below. How to add a darker value. First complete a soft layer, then add an additional layer with the same amount of pressure. Gradually achieve a darker look by layering, pressing slightly harder, changing direction and overlapping, and using a darker pencil when necessary.
