Pop Art/Color Theory Project...
combining inspiration found in 1990's street art and 1960's pop art
The subject matter...
Find a logo (or create your own) for our next project. What are the objects or subjects around you every day that you beliieve are important in today's society? OR... is there something more personal, more specific to YOU that you would like to use as a design in order to showcase the importance of that item to others? For inspiration use Shepard Fairey, the artist responsible for a world-wide infiltration of "OBEY" utilizing Andre the Giant as an image. This was something he developed way back in 1989 while he was attending college at Rhode Island School of Design... one of the most prestigious art schools in our country.
Shepard Fairy Quotes
The Obey Giant website says: "The sticker has no meaning but exists only to cause people to react, to contemplate and search for meaning in the sticker".
Originally intended to garner fame from his classmates and college peers, Fairey states:
"At first I was only thinking about the response from my clique of art school and skateboard friends. The fact that a larger segment of the public would not only notice, but investigate, the unexplained appearance of the stickers was something I had not contemplated. When I started to see reactions and consider the sociological forces at work surrounding the use of public space and the insertion of a very eye-catching but ambiguous image, I began to think there was the potential to create a phenomenon."
"People have often demanded the sticker merely because they have seen it everywhere and possessing a sticker provides a sense of belonging."
Look around you everyday at popular culture and "Pop Art" for inspiration. Whatever you choose as your design will be repeated in order to make a statement...

Our other inspiration will be Andy Warhol. We will be using his iconic work to explore both subject and color theory. We will be watching a film about the artist in the upcoming weeks...
